Five months to PALM XLI

Letter from the Chair

Hello PALM alumni,

I wanted to take a moment to say hello and introduce myself for those who might not know me yet. My name is Jess Rasmussen, and I was recently elected to be the 2024 PALM Chair.

I have a special affection for this ride; PALM 10 was my first bicycle tour. I started riding with my grandfather. After he passed, I conned my mother and grandmother into riding with me. We have now had four generations ride with us. I am so very blessed to have added an entire PALM family over the years.

I look forward to working with our amazing volunteers and riders to make this a great year! Our co-chairs Shawn Towsley and Paul LaRose are contacting schools and securing sites with the amenities we need. Our great route team will create the safest routes we can with the tools we have. Local input is welcome for cyclist-friendly roads.

We have a goal to reach more riders this year to join us. Any and all ideas are welcome. Thank you for helping us make PALM more than just another bicycle tour — thank you for making PALM a family.

  1. Are there any options for people who want to ride a portion of the ride? I am fully committed to the full ride, but some of my cycle friends might want to ride a day or two. Thanks

    1. We often have people who can only ride part of the tour, due to work or other obligations. As a nonprofit group, our reasonable fees only cover our costs, so we cannot do a discounted or prorated fee for those who do not ride the complete tour.

  2. Please consider spending more money to upgrade the quality and quantity of food. It seems we often run low or out, and the spending limits for the site coordinators are far too low. The MUP ride is charging $1299 this year. Raise your price and let us eat well. Good luck this year!

    1. Thank you for your comment, Rob! We try to keep the meal prices affordable for families that ride with us, while still providing an adequate amount of food for all riders. We do everything in our power to avoid shortages, and we are working on solutions. One thing we hope to communicate to our participants is that they not take more than one serving. For those who have special dietary considerations, or find the serving sizes unsatisfactory, we encourage them to frequent local establishments in the towns we visit. We appreciate your input on this topic. Thank you for volunteering, and helping to improve PALM.
